Commonwealth War Graves Commission

CWGC War Graves Week is coming to South Lanarkshire 12th & 19th May 2024 The Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates the 1.7 million men and women from the Commonwealth who lost their lives in the two World Wars, ensuring they will never be forgotten. Funded by member governments, the CWGC now maintains cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations in more than 150 countries throughout the world. Behind every name on a war grave or memorial is a human story and War Graves Week provides a unique opportunity to discover the World War heritage on your doorstep. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission will be bringing War Graves Week to South Lanarkshire by offering tours at Strathaven Cemetery on Sunday 12th May at 2 pm and Hamilton (Bent Road) Cemetery on Sunday 19th May at 2 pm. The free guided tours will provide an opportunity to find out about the work of the CWGC and to discover the remarkable stories of the men and women who died in the First and Second World Wars and who are buried in the local community. The tours will be led by a volunteer for the CWGC, who is “well informed and an excellent communicator”. The tours are free but must be booked in advance at  www.cwgc.org/tours  or www.cwgc.org/war-graves-week
