Emily Duff has been compared to Lucinda Williams, Loretta Lynn, Nick Cave, Marcia Ball, Tony Joe White, The Carter Family, Tracey Nelson & Steve Earle. Rolling Stone Magazine writes that Emily Duff is, “One Part Patti Smith, One Part Muscle Shoals.” Songwriter Wille Nile claims Emily to be “The Real Thing & a Great Artist.” He even says that Keith Richards would DIG her! And Henry Yates at Country Music UK Magazine writes, “Emily Duff is a performer whose time is surely now.”
Emily Duff’s street-smart poetry and vocal style conjure moods & images that seduce the listener to explore emotional vistas that entice and beguile. Her small batch brand of SWEET & SOUR ROCK AND ROLL WITH A GREAT BIG HIT OF COUNTRY SOUL, digs deep, weaving a patchwork of sin, tragedy, romance and regret that lies at your feet begging to be mended.
A dark optimist, Emily Duff is a unique voice for women at a very important time. A happily married wife content with a sweet & simple life, a devoted mother who never had one, and a dedicated and reliable observer whose 30 years of sobriety allows her to be fully “woke,” Emily is not afraid to show up and Speak The Truth.
A prolific songwriter and humble servant of song, Emily was born in Flushing Queens, NY and raised by a pack of cigarettes. Her Mama taught her 4 perfect chords and then ran off, leaving Emily to figure the rest out on her own. With a deep love for guitars, Chuck Berry & The Staple Singers (and enough energy to level a small country), Emily carved a path straight to CBGBs and never looked back.
Emily replaced Jeff Buckley as lead singer for Gary Lucas’ Gods & Monsters and had the honour of opening for Bob Dylan & Paul Simon at Jones Beach Amphitheater with her band, Eudora. After a hiatus to “get straight,” get happy and raise some pretty cute kids, Emily released her debut solo record (2015), “GO TELL YOUR FRIENDS,” Produced by
Craig Bishop at NY Noise (Rosanne Cash, Shawn Colvin, Joan Osborne, Michelle Branch). Emily followed that up with “MAYBE IN THE MORNING,” (2017) recorded at FAME in Muscle Shoals, AL and produced by Craig Bishop, receiving 5 stars in Country Music UK Magazine and just this year released HALLELUJAH HELLO (2019), also made at FAME, Produced by John Gifford III and featuring an All-Star Band of veteran Muscle Shoals, AL Musicians including members of the original FAME GANG.
“’Hallelujah Hello’ is Emily’s best album to date. She reminds me of some of the great earthy, big-voiced roots singers I loved in the 1970’s— Tracy Nelson, Marcia Ball and more. She borrows from that blues and roots tradition but makes it her very own with her sensitive and personal lyrics.” – Rosanne Cash
“Magnificent in its lyrical capacity, Duff flits between the swing and the honky tonk, between the rockabilly and soul, between country and rock and roll, between the solemnity of Mahalia Jackson and the mockery of the Rolling Stones of Sticky Fingers. An authentic gem.” – Rock on Magazine
“Duff proves that lightning can strike twice in the same place. Following what has to be the most underrated album of the past few years, Maybe In the Morning, Duff returns to Muscle Shoals a second time. But this time the lightning is in the form of a gospel album. Taken together, her last two recordings demonstrate that Duff is one of a handful of today’s great R&B artists, not just as a vocalist but as a writer and bandleader as well. She’s dynamite.” – Amos Perrine, No Depression
Emily has recorded and released 5 records in the past 6 years. Two at FAME, one at NY Noise and two with producer, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel at his Brooklyn studio, Cowboy Technical Services. Her most recent record, “Razor Blade Smile” (July 23, 2021) produced by Eric “Roscoe” Ambel (Joan Jett, Blue Mountain, The Bottle Rockets, Del Lords) takes Emily back to her NYC Street-Punk-Rock-Roots, proving that great songwriting defies genres and transcends playlists.
“Duff’s gritty mix of desire and desperation can be found at every turn, a sound seemingly inspired by the unsettled state of a covid-conflicted world.”- American Songwriter “Songs of hard times and tough love. Heart and Soul. Honest and forthright.” – Lonesome Highway
“A roadhouse punk rocker — The Clash meets Jerry Lee Lewis” – No Depression
“Emily Duff to me will be the torchbearer for this generation, following the likes of Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams. Rating 9/10.” – Maximum Volume Music
Emily has shared stages with Willie Nile, Steve Earle & Shawn Colvin, Donavon Frankenreiter, Marcia Ball, Donnie Fritts, Scott Sharrard and many others. Emily’s version of Willie Nile’s “HELL YEAH” appears on the Paradiddle Records Tribute to Willie Nile, has 5 songs in the Independent feature, “Looking for the Jackalope” now available on amazon.com and has written and performed on numerous TV and radio commercials. Emily is currently writing songs with R&R Hall of Fame inductee, Ricky Byrd (Joan Jett & the Blackhearts) for his Clean Getaway Project.
Emily Duff resides in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village with her husband, two teenage children, a hound dog named Banjo, and two dozen guitars – all in 340 square feet of 3rd floor walk-up, old school, downtown NYC tenement style. She is grateful to play music with legends and sincerely appreciates the beautiful life she’s been given. All of Emily’s work is available for sale in multiple formats online at Bandcamp.
